I would argue that the people programming things that are used on starships are not in the field. The people in the field are the specialist who need to be there to monitor and explore. Most of the engineering work of design and development happens on research stations and other places that may not be reflected in Star Trek specifically. It would illogical to send a programmer so far away for work that can be done from anywhere. And that is retaining the concept of programming that is argued by society right now as being in risk. Not to mention that programming is not always by definition writing software at a keyboard.

Solid take. Do modern day battleships have programmers re-writing core OS components? Hopefully in a few hundred years, we have a lot of the basics locked down so you only need people who are good in working with expertly crafted tools in the field.

There were also call-outs to the facility where the Doctor was created. Sounded like a dedicated research installation which must be full of programmers.

They do and they don't.

For example F16 pilots in Ukraine were unable to fly combat missions because USA stopped help during March 2025. Jamming pods are making Russian radars less effective and they were not getting software updates from USA.

So programmers are not on the frontline, but they are still absolutely vital part of such an old plane like F16 is. Now consider F35 which is very reliant on the software.

Also notable seeing as how they also increased Ultimate from $20 to $30.

The whole thing bothers me because I lived through cable TV going to hell because it was bundled and there wasn’t any market discipline. For instance, MTV used to show music videos that people wanted to watch (give people a choice in YouTube and they watch them) and started showing bad reality TV shows (that nobody would watch on VoD) because 65+ Sumner Redstone decreed it. (Once competitive FAST services arrived MTV introduced 5 channels of real music videos that are great). The market couldn’t tell Redstone he was wrong because you paid for MTV if you paid for cable.

On one hand Game Pass can be a good deal and it has not reached the enshittification stage yet so I am sure they are paying good money to the creators of the best games, for now. Once they crush the competition it’s an old story and it’s going to get worse. Games will get so bad that people will decide to play outside instead.

is it? or is this the actual source.

Coverage on this has been pretty misleading. Posted the full pdf, it refers to other stuff regarding web display advertising. Most news outlets have taken it out of context.

My best guess is that it's simpler for the pilots to focus on the plane because of less interactions with other planes and crowded airspace. The routes are probably simpler compared to domestic fights.

If the whole point of these flights is training new pilots, would you even want to worry about cargo, especially if it's for a customer?

Well I hope someone with actual aviation knowledge shows up and enlightens us.
